All About HasBeen

Who Is Rik Alvarez?

Discover the HasBeen

HasBeen is owned and operated by Rik Alvarez. Rik is a published author, a former writer and editor for Fun Publications, but most notably the former Creative Manager of the Transformers and GI Joe brands at Hasbro. While collaborating with Fun Publications, he wrote a number or articles for the club magazine, character bios and comics. During his time at Hasbro, Rik focused primarily on the Transformers Brand Intellectual Property development across various entertainment platforms. His projects included the development of the Transformers live-action films, Transformers Prime, the War for Cybertron video games and GI Joe Renegades. Rik has been collecting toys and comics for over 25 years and during that time has written several books on collecting Transformers toys.

In 2021, he purchased the world-famous Frame & Picture Shoppe known for immaculately framing art, photographs and diplomas of all kind. Rik still owns and operates the business and has become well known for framing concert posters and pop culture related art. All through high school and college Rik worked part time at Play With This Collectible Toys. Under the tutelage of his mentor Scott Talis, he expanded his knowledge of the fantastic world of toys and shows from all eras. Towards the end of 2022, he began the process of splitting his frame store in half to pursue a lifelong dream of opening his own collectible toy store. Originally intending to call the store Play With This Too in honor of his mentor, Rik noticed he was called a “has been” online after having been booked for an appearance at a convention. He fell in love with the name and jokes “I used to be someone. Now I’m a HasBeen!”
